Warning: Auctioneers being solicited for news opportunity

Infomercial scam

Several U.S. auction companies have reported being solicited by production companies claiming to be developing news segments for national networks (e.g. MSNBC, FOX Business, etc.). These companies highlight their affiliation with prominent media figures such as Hugh Downs, Bryant Gumbel and Joan Lunden.

These producers are not creating news stories but instead soliciting Auctioneers for infomercials. Producers will produce a short infomercial for the auction company. Auction companies are responsible for covering the production costs of developing video segments, with costs ranging from $20,000 to $30,000.

Auction companies cannot be guaranteed their segments will air on national news programs. If contacted by a suspicious producer, inquire as to the costs associated with covering the story. Genuine media outlets do not charge for news stories. Please contact clongly@auctioneers.org if you have questions or concerns.
